Where to Play
10 Cent Line:  A difference of 10 cents in the money line between the favourite and the underdog.

20 Cent line:  A difference of 20 Cents in the money line between the favourite and the underdog.

Action:  Anytime a player has a bet it is referred to as having "Action", unless otherwise stated by the Sportsbook. For example, bets in baseball
typically will have no action if a game is postponed or a selected pitcher does not start.

ATS:  Against The Spread. Generally refers to betting on a certain team to cover a certain amount of points.

Bet:  A wager

Book: An abbreviated name for sportsbook.

Buck:  In the betting world, $100.

Buying Points:  When a player pays an extra price to receive half a point or more in his favour on a point spread game.

Circled Game:  A game in which the betting action has been reduced, usually in cases such as rain delayed games, games with injuries prop bets
etc. The types of games cannot be included in Parlays or Teasers (see below).

Cover:  When a team beats the spread.

Dime: $1,000

Dime Line:  A line where the juice (see below) is 5% instead of the standard 10%

Dog:  The team that is most likely to lose. Also a shortened term for Underdog.

Dog Player:  A player that generally bets on the underdogs.

Dollar:  $100 (also referred to as a buck)

Double Action:  An "if win bet" that continues when one of its individual bets wins, ties or is cancelled

Double Header: Two games played in the same day. Traditionally in baseball.
Edge: Advantage.

Even Money:  A sports bet where the odds are 1/1 and the player doesn't pay a bookmakers commission on a losing bet.

Exotic wager: Generally refers to horse racing wagers that are not straight wagers: exactas, trifectas, superfectas and so on.

Favourite:  The sports team everyone expects to win. The lower the odds, the more the team is favoured.

Fifty cents:   $50.00

First half wager:   A sports bet placed on the first half of a game.

Futures: Odds posted on events well in advance. For example: Super Bowl, World series, Stanley Cup etc...

Half a dollar:  $50.00

Half time bet:  A bet placed on the last half of a game.

Handicapper:  One who studies, rates and provides sports betting tips and advice

Handicapping:  He/She who tries to predict the outcome of an event.

Hedging:  Placing bets on both sides of a sports event. For example: You might pick the New York Yankees to win against the Boston Red Sox and
also pick them to lose against the Sox, thereby almost guaranteeing you a minimum amount of winnings.

Home team:  The team usually playing in its own stadium; traditionally listed on the bottom of a sports betting match up.

Hot game:  The big one! A game which draws a lot of action on one side by knowledgeable handicappers.

Juice:  The bookmaker's commission on a losing bet, sometimes called "vigorish".

Laying the points:  Betting on the team that is favoured to win and giving up the points.

Laying the price:  Betting the favourite by laying money odds.

Limit:  The minimum a sportsbook will allow you to bet on a particular wager.

Line:  The current odds / point spread on a sports event.

Linemaker:  He who sets the original Line and point spreads.    

Listed pitchers:  The selected pitchers that are set to start in a given baseball game. If one or both of the selected pitchers do not start, then the bet
will have no action.

Lock:  A can't lose bet. Unless I'm the one doing the betting.  

Longshot:  Just like that Phil Collins song...Against all odds. Great moneymaker if it cashes in though.

MLB :   Major League Baseball

Money line:  Odds expressed in terms of money. With money odds, whenever there is a
minus (-) you bet that amount to win a hundred dollars; where there is a plus (+) you get that amount for every hundred dollars wagered.

Move the line:  See "Buying Points".

MVP: Most Valuable Player.
Nickel:  $500

NHL: National Hockey League

No action:  Basically, a cancelled bet, usually due to a game being postponed or perhaps being played in a location that is different than that was
listed when the original line was set. No money is lost or won in this scenario.

Off the board:  A game or event in which the sportsbook will not accept any action.  

One:  $100

Over:  A bet in which the bettor guesses that the combined point total of two teams will be above the specified total.

Overtime:  An extra period, quarter or inning played as a result of being tied at the end of regulation time.   

Parlay:  A bet with two or more events in which teams must win or cover for the bettor to win and receive higher payouts.

PGA :  Professional Golfers Association.

Pick 'em:  When two teams are thought to be equal. Flip a Coin. Also referred to as "Pick".

Point spread:  The predicted scoring differential between two opponents as quoted by a sportsbook:

Postponed:  A contest cancelled for any reason and rescheduled at a later date. Usually due to inclement weather. This will usually result in no
action for any bets that had been made on the game.

Pitching change:  In baseball, when a scheduled starting pitcher is changed before the start of the game, Then the game in question will generally
have no action.

Push:  When the game ends with no winner or loser for betting purposes, sometimes also called a "Tie".
Rained out:   A game canceled due to bad weather. The game is usually rescheduled at a later  date. Again, any wagers made on the game usually
have no action.

Re-opening a line:  The first line that is offered after a pitching change has been announced.

Run down:  When all the lines for a specific date, sport and time are given to a bettor.

Run line:  In baseball, when a spread is used instead of the money line. There are 1½ and 2½ run lines.

Sides:  The two teams playing: the underdog and the favorite

Single action:  An "if win bet" that continues only when one of its individual bets wins.

Spread:   The predicted scoring differential between two opponents as quoted by a sportsbook. Sometimes referred to as "point spread."

Steam :  When there is excessive betting on one side of a contest.

Straight bet:  The most common bet. Pick one team or entry to win either against the spread or on the money line.

Taking the points:  Bet with the underdog and take the point spread in your favour. Good Luck!

Taking the price:   Bet the underdog and accept the money odds in your favour.

Teaser:  A bet combining two or more games together and giving the player a fixed number of additional points in his favor.

Ticket: A wager—before computers, all bets were taken manually on paper tickets.

Tie:  See "Push"  

Total:  The combined amount of goals,  points or runs earned, scored by both teams during the game, including extra time.

Totals bet:  A bet in which the bettor believes that the total score by both teams in a game will be more or less than the line posted by the sportsbook.

Under bet:  As above, but the exception the total points scored will be under a certain figure.
